General Description

The role of the Senior Accountant may vary depending on the size and structure of the organization. Generally, the position is responsible for managing and supervising day-to-day financial operations, ensuring accurate and compliant financial reporting, and supporting the implementation of financial strategies. The Senior Accountant provides timely and reliable financial information to the Finance Manager and, when necessary, assists in preparing reports for external stakeholders such as auditors, regulatory authorities, and financial institutions.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Month-end Close Activities: Perform journal entries, accruals, prepayments, reconciliations, and related processes in a timely manner.
  • Operations Coordination: Work closely with operations and upcountry technicians to ensure completeness and accuracy of financial information and proper documentation.
  • Cross-Functional Partnering: Act as a liaison between finance and other departments within and outside the organization.
  • Audit and Tax Management: Coordinate annual external audits, prepare tax returns, and ensure adherence to Tanzanian tax laws.
  • Cost Control & Inventory Management: Oversee cost accounting, track maintenance costs (e.g., spares, casual labor), implement cost control strategies to improve margins.
  • Internal Controls & Compliance: Design, implement, and maintain internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with TRA, NSSF, VAT, IFRS/TFRS, and anti-fraud measures.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, conduct variance analysis, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Process Improvement: Participate in initiatives leading to continuous operational excellence.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Cooperate with colleagues on HSE matters, do not misuse safety equipment, and participate in internal/external HSE trainings.

Qualifications / Experience and Technical Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience in accounting, preferably in energy/oil & gas companies.
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Accounting or Finance. CPA certification preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of US GAAP and IFRS, with understanding of SOX environment.
  • Proficiency in SAGE or similar systems; versatile with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Problem solver with attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
