Job Description

The VAT Assistant Accountant will support the Finance Department in ensuring accurate financial reporting, proper accounting practices, and VAT compliance. The role includes preparing VAT claims, maintaining TRA compliance, reconciling accounts, and supporting donor reporting.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Accounting and Financial Management

  • Prepare and process payment vouchers, staff advances, claims, and journal entries.
  • Maintain systematic and up-to-date accounting records.
  • Perform bank, cash, and ledger reconciliations.
  • Monitor expenditures and manage petty cash.
  • Reconcile supplier statements and follow up on payments.
  • Support field offices with documentation and reporting.

2. VAT and Tax Compliance

  • Verify compliance of tax invoices and EFD receipts.
  • Reconcile VAT control accounts monthly.
  • Maintain VAT schedules and trackers.
  • Prepare and submit VAT refund claims and follow up with TRA.
  • Assist in VAT exemptions and track approvals.
  • Post VAT journals and verify correct VAT treatment.
  • Guide staff on VAT compliance and support audits.

3. Reporting and Compliance

  • Assist in preparing financial reports.
  • Support audits and ensure compliance with donor regulations.
  • Maintain VAT documentation filing systems.
  • Participate in staff capacity building on VAT issues.

4. Administrative and Other Duties

  • Support asset management and fixed asset registers.
  • Collaborate with admin and logistics teams.
  • Assist in budgeting and cost tracking.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field.
  • CPA/ACCA is an advantage.
  • 2+ years experience (NGO experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of VAT and TRA procedures.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Navision, SAP, QuickBooks, etc.).
  • Strong Excel and analytical skills.
