Summary of Key Functions and Accountabilities:

Under the supervision of the Supply Chain Manager – Strategy Development & Implementation, the Supply Chain Specialist will work closely with UNICEF country and regional offices, the Supply Division (SD), and the Programme Group (PG). The role focuses on strengthening supply chain systems, supporting country programs, and enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Regional Leadership & Strategic Coordination

  • Serve as the focal point for Supply Chain Strengthening (SCS) within the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) and beyond.
  • Support regional offices in developing and implementing systems strengthening strategies.
  • Represent UNICEF in partner and donor meetings, mobilizing resources for regional and country-level supply chain initiatives.
  • Ensure strategic alignment between UNICEF supply chain strategies and national plans.

2. Country Support & Evidence-Based Implementation

  • Provide direct support to “champion countries” implementing priority supply chain activities.
  • Conduct comprehensive supply chain assessments and develop roadmaps for improvement using UNICEF’s Maturity Model and ACE tools.
  • Promote integration between immunization and other health supply chains for greater efficiency.

3. Capacity Building & Knowledge Management

  • Develop and disseminate training materials, webinars, and workshops to strengthen country-level capacity.
  • Document case studies, progress reports, and best practices to foster organizational learning.
  • Contribute to a global Supply Chain Strengthening community of practice.

4. Community of Practice & Collaboration

  • Establish a dynamic community of practice to encourage collaboration and innovation across countries.
  • Create knowledge-sharing platforms for supply chain champions and stakeholders.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation & Performance Tracking

  • Maintain and enhance the Country Coordination Activity Tracker and monitor strategic indicators on Supply Chain Strengthening.
  • Track implementation progress, analyze results, and provide data-driven insights for decision-making.

6. Innovation & Systems Improvement

  • Design and pilot innovative tools, models, and approaches to enhance supply chain performance.
  • Promote continuous improvement, resilience, and efficiency in supply chain systems.

7. Donor Relations & Grant Management

  • Collaborate with partnerships specialists to develop donor proposals and manage grants effectively.
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements and timely reporting of outcomes and impacts.
  • Build strong relationships with donors and partners to sustain support and funding.

Education:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s) required in relevant fields.
  • A first-level university degree with 7 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a Master’s degree.

Work Experience:

  • At least 5 years of experience in supply chain management within the public or private sector, focusing on quantitative analysis, planning, or health logistics.
  • Strong understanding of health supply chain systems, assessments, and implementation strategies.
  • Experience collaborating with global, regional, and national partners, including ministries of health and NGOs.
  • Knowledge of UNICEF operations and familiarity with international humanitarian organizations is an advantage.
